If the employee is ill for 4 days or more, this is paid to them instead of or as part of their normal wages. The entitlement to SSP is limited to a maximum of 28 weeks in the year.
If the employee becomes pregnant and, providing they have been working for the same employer for at least 41 weeks prior to the baby's due date, the employer is obliged to pay them SMP.
The employee is entitled to 6 weeks at 90% of their gross wages and a further 33 weeks at £117 for the fiscal year 2008 / 09
If the employee is adopting a child and providing they have been working for the same employer for at least 26 weeks prior to the date the adoption is approved, they are entitled to SAP.
The entitlement is 39 weeks at 90% of their weekly gross earnings or £117, whichever is lowest, for the fiscal year 2008 /09.
Employees are entitled to redundancy pay if they satisfy the following conditions:
- they have been in continuous employment for a minimum of two years
- they are not on a fixed-term contract
The entitlement is as follows:
- aged between 18 - 21 - half week's pay or £160, whichever is lowest, for every year worked
- aged between 22 - 40 - 1 week's pay or £330, whichever is lowest, for every year worked
- aged 41 and over - 1 and a half week's pay or £495, whichever is lowest for every year worked
Whether the employee is part-time or full time they are entitled to Holiday Pay.
The entitlement is 4.8 times their normal working week, for instance, if they work 5 days a week their entitlement is 4.8 x 5 = 24 days per annum. This is to cover the new legislation that guarantees the employee 4 (four) paid bank holidays per annum.
Employees are entitled to at least 1 (one) week's notice if their employer decides to terminate their contract of employment.
The national minimum wage has been around for a number of years now. Unless the employee is a live-in nanny, these rates apply:
NMW current rates (from 1st October 2008) are as follows:
- 22 year olds and over: £5.73 per hour
- 18-21 year olds: £4.77
- 16-17 year olds: £3.53
